B5. Social Housing Wait Lists and the One-Person Household in Ontario

Suzanne Swanton is a housing intern of the Canadian Policy Research Network CPRN)’s Internship Program--a joint initiative of the Social Housing Services Corporation (SHSC) and CPRN. Suzanne looks at the challenges and experiences of low-income, one-person households under 65 who are applicants on Ontario social housing wait lists in Kingston and Guelph. Such households comprise some 40% of the wait list, confront severe affordability issues in the private market and deal with long wait times for limited numbers of social housing units.
